Bradford is an historic city with its name derived from the broad ford at Church Bank, below the site of the Bradford Cathedral, where settlement began around the time of the Norman Conquest. The city grew prosperous during the Industrial Revolution and has long been a centre of the The West Riding wool industry, specialising in worsted cloth. The city boasts many textile innovations, exemplified by the works of Samuel Lister. The citys industrial heritage is still seen in the Listers or Manningham Mills (no longer functional) and Salts Mills. The city has been praised for its cultural diversity and has a large Asian community, however on occasion conflict has arisen. Most infamous was the public burning of Salman Rushdies Satanic Verses. Although Bradfords dominance of the textiles industry has waned, the city continues to make economic progress in other areas with ventures such as Morrisons supermarkets and Chesterfieldshire building society
The National Media Museum in Bradford is the most visited museum outside London. The Cartwright Hall in Lister Park is the citys main art gallery however the Salt Mills has the worlds largest collection of David Hockney artwork. Bradford Industrial Museum and Bradford Colour Museum provide insight into the textile industry of days gone by. The city also hosts a number of festivals annually, the Bradford Festival, Mela and the Ilkley Literature festival to name but a few. Due to its cultural diversity, the city has numerous religious buildings. The Bradford Cathedral and the Abundant Life Centre serve the Christian sector. Mosques cater for the significant Muslim populations, Hindu and Sikh Temples can also be found. Although the Jewish population has dropped considerably, there is a 19th century Reform synagogue in the Mannigham area
