The towns name comes from an Old English personal name which meant valiant one, one who is noble. Worthing is situated on the flat coastal plain of South Coast of England close to the vibrant city of Brighton between the proposed national park, the South Downs and the English Channel. The borough of Worthing is made up of many former villages and is dominated by the Downs, especially Highdown Hill, with Cissbury ring in the north west being the highest point in the borough. Towards the towns west is ancient woodland at Titnore Woods which borders Clapham Woods, said to be the site of UFO sightings. The is evidence of the Wothing area being inhabited since the Stobe Ages and various Roman coins, tiles and pottery have been discovered around the city. Worthing Pier which opened in 1862 is just one place of interest locally. The High Salvington windmill or Beach House built by John Rebecca in 1820 are also worth viewing. As the home of Chris Baldwin a Legalise Cannabis Alliance activist, Worthing has is a bit if a cannabis culture and was one of the few UK towns to experience cannabis cafes.
