Solihull has existed since medieval times and was founded as a market centre. By-passed by the Industrial Revolution, it remained as such until the 20th century with the largest growth resulting from the arrival of a Land Rover car plant. The town name is thought to mean dirty, muddy or soily hill. Often thought to be in Birmingham, the National Exhibition Centre and most of Birmingham International Airport is in the borough of Solihull. The town has a number of Parks with Malvern and Brueton parks being the closest to the town centre. The Grand Union Canal passes within one mile of Solihull town centre and links the town to the River Thames. Among the towns notable residents are Birmigham City FC manager Steve Bruce, comedian Japer Carrott and football pundit Andy Gray
