Watford is a largely urbanised Hertfordshire district to the north of Greater London. The town is likely to have originated during Saxon times when settlements developed around the ford of the River Colne. The river was forded at this point by travelers going to and from London and the midlands. This location helped the town grow and Watford was mainly an agricultural community for centuries. The Grand Junction Canal and the London and Birmingham Railway arrived with the Industrial Revolution and allowed the town excellent communications. Watfords industry thrived as a consequence during the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, it has the head offices of many large companies such as National Lottery operator the Camelot Group, Iveco, Total Oil and Sanyo. The town centre has a high concentration of bars, cafes and restaurants - mainly Indian restaurants. This led to Wafords label as the curry capital of Britain with the most Indian restaurants per head than anywhere else. The Watford Palace Theatre is an almost century old Edwardian building and presents an annual pantomime along with the comedies and dramas staged throughout the year. Watford is the birthplace of footballer turned actor Vinny Jones, singer Sir Elton John, politician Mo Mowlam, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell and female weightlifter Michaela Breeze
