This coastal town is situated at the mouth of the River Tyne, on the south bank. South Shields was once famous for shipyards and coal mines but its economy now relies mainly on the service industry, retail and leisure. Many residents commute to nearby Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland. The town has six miles of coastline, three of which are the Leas, a National Trust protected area. This coastline and the three miles of river front are dominated by huge piers, best viewed from the Lawe Top. Located at Marsden Bay is one of the largest seabird colonies in the UK which also boasts Marsden Rock, a world famous rock formation. Built into the cliff opposite is the pub and restuarant The Grotto, the only one of its kind if Europe. Westoe Village is one of the most historic parts of the town; is a street lined with Victorian houses and has often been the setting for Catherine Cookson novels. South Shields is culturally diverse and has had a Yemeni community since the 1890s. The population was at its largest after WWII but has since declined partly due to migrations to areas such as Birmingham and Liverpool
