Gateshead is in Tyne and Wear on the south side of the River Tyne, opposite Newcastle. It boasts the MetroCentre, the largest shopping centre in Europe and is linked to nearby Newcastle by ten bridges. Often overshadowed by its neighbour, Gateshead has recently had a cultural revival led by the Millenium Bridge, winner of the James Stirling Prize for Architecture in 2002. The town is also noted for being the home of the Angel of the North, Britains largest sculpture which was designed by Anthony Gormley. Gateshead has strong links with the steel and iron industry, namely Ambrose Crowley, a nail manufacturer who set up works on the River Derwent. The Crowley works were something of a tourist attraction and the largest of that kind in Europe. Robert Stirling Newalls patented process for the manufacture of wire ropes brought further success to Gatehead. The establishment of the headquarters in the town led to a worldwide industry of wire drawing. The Gateshead International Stadium is a well known venue for summer athletics events and also hosts rugby league fixtures
