Guildford is believed to have been founded by the Saxons and is likely to have been chosen because Harrow Way, an ancient trackway, crossed the River Wey via a ford at this point. This perhaps being the origin of the second part of the name. The exact origin of the first part, which means gold, is not clear but suggestions are that it refers to flowers lining the ford or the colour of the sand. Guildford has an attractive town centre with numerous shops, pubs and cafes to keep vistors entertained.
