Sudbury is a small, ancient market town on the River Stour which prospered during the Late Middle Ages from the weaving and silk industries of the time. The town became famous for its artists during the 18th century, among them was John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough. The formers birthplace is now named Gainsborough House and is a museum of his work and open to the public. A commemorative statue if the painter stands outside St Peters Church in the town centre. Protective of its ancient culture, the 18th and 19th century houses near the town centre have had modern additions but remain intact. Sudbury has a number of towns on its fringes, these include Great Cornard, Bollingdon, Newmans Green, Chilton, Borley, Rodbridge Corner, Middleton and Henny Street
