This Staffordshire city takes its name from the orginal ancient parish Stoke-upon-Trent and is often shortened to Stoke. Also known as the Potteries, the area has been linked with a thriving pottery industry since the 17th century. The construction of the Trent and Mersey Canal enabled the transportation of china clay from Cornwall which in turn enabled the production of bone china and creamware. Staffordshire pottery eventually got international acclaim initially through the efforts of Josiah Wedgewood who researched and experimented with pottery techniques. The area has a distinctive local dialect known as Potteries dialect and two local specialties- Potteries Oatcake and lobby which is a stew similar to Lancashire hotpot. Other notable individuals associated with Stoke include actors such as Neil Morrissey of Men Behaving Badly fame and Hugh Dancy, TV presenters Anthea Turner and Nick Hancock, football pundit Garth Crooks and singer Robbie Williams
