This small Staffordshire city is an important ecclesiastical centre and is famous for its three-spired cathedral. Pilgrims gathering to worship at the shrine of St Chad brought prosperity to the city then in the Middle Ages, industries included woolen cloth and leather. During the 18th century, Lichfield was a busy coaching centre but the arrival of the railway led to a decline in business. By the 19th century, brewing was the main industry and today, the citys most famous businesses are Armitage Shanks - baths, sinks, and bidet manufacturers and silversmith Arthur Price of England. Dr Samuel Johnson, writer of the first Dictionary of the English Language was born in Lichfield. The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum in the city is a display of his life, work and personality. Other notable people associated with Lichfield are Erasmus Darwin - Charles Darwins grandfather, his home, the Erasmus Darwin House opened in 1999 as a museum once it was restored. Lichfield was also home to the founder of the Ashmoleum Museum in Oxford - Elias Ashmole, the famous 18th century actor David Garrick and Cold Feet actress Helen Baxendale. On a more gruesome note, the last person in England to be burnt at the stake for heresy was burnt in the Market Place in Lichfield
