Rotherham lies in the Don Valley between Sheffield and Doncaster in South Yorkshire. This large town is built near the confluence of the river Don and the river Rother and was not founded until the Early Middle Ages. However, there is evidence of Iron Age and Roman settlements in the area, the latter having taken advantage of iron deposits in the area. Coal mining was also a major industry and brought the Industrial Revolution to Rotherham. The town has numerous associations with popular culture, namely The Arctic Monkeys, the Rotherham Arts Centre where Jarvis Cocker and Pulp had their first gig and the Civic Theatre and Arts Centre where Sean Bean made his stage debut. It is also the birthplace of the likes of the Chuckle Brothers, former England goalkeeper David Seaman, athlete Chris Rawlinson and Christopher Wolstenholme - bass guitarist of Muse. Rotherham has several buildings of interest and boasts one of only four bridge chapels in the country. The Catcliffe Glass Cone - a brick glassmaking furnace and the oldest of its kind in Western Europe, is on the outskirts of the town while the medieval ruins of the Cistercian Roche Abbey are in nearby Maltby
