This large town is located on the River Dearne, just north of Sheffield. It was an important town for linen weaving in the 18th and 19th centuries and also has a strong historical link with glass making. Perhaps best known for coal mining, Barnsley was the subject of George Orwells book, The Road to Wigan Pier. All the coal mines in the borough are now closed. Due to the mining links, Barnsley has a long tradition of brass bands, Grimethorpe Colliery Band which is based in a nearby village, is perhaps the best in Britain. The height of its fame came when it featured in the film Brassed Off starring Robert Carlyle. The town centre has recently been the focus of the Remaking Barnsley programme from which a new transport interchange, a Digital Media Centre and a new cultural centre have all emerged. Barnsley boasts one of the largest further and higher education establishment in Europe. Barnsley College has sites across the town such as the Old Mill Lane site and Eastgate House. Two members of and the indie band Arctic Monkeys attended the college. The University of Huddersfield has recently opened a campus near the Barnsley Town Hall. Noteworthy town attractions include Cannon Hall Museum, Locke Park and Wentworth Castle and Gardens. Among Barnsleys famous residents are presenter Michael Parkinson, retired cricket umpire Dickie Bird, cricketer Darren Gough and Athlete John Mayock
