Yeovil was first recorded in the Domesday book as Givle, its name comes via an Anglo-Saxon corruption for the Celtic word for forked river (Gifl). The local football team, Yeovil Town FC, are known as the Giant Killers and recently gained promotion to League One of the Football League. The towns glove-making past is referrenced in the teams nickname of The Glovers. Yeovil has a thriving nightlife and experienced a recent increase in troublemakers which prompted the utilisation of the biometric fingerprint scanning system in its nightclubs from April 2006. It is the first UK town to adopt this system of crime reduction and prevention.
