Wells is a small cathedral city in Somerset and is so named because of three wells in the area dedicated to Saint Andrew and thought, during the Middle Ages, to have curative powers. The first was located in the market square and the other two in the grounds of the Bishops Palace and cathedral. The Bishops Palace is still used today by the Bishop of Bath and Wells. The cathedral, a grade I listed building with parts dating from the 10th century, is also notable for the west front - said to be the finest European statuary collection, the still functioning Medieval Clock and the unusual scissored acrh design of the east end nave. Wells was originally a Roman city but grew to importance during Saxon times. Stoberry Park was the location of a WWII POW camp and housed Italian prisoners and then German prisoners after the Battle of Normandy. Today, Wells is a popular tourist destination and a pleasant market town. Its proximity to areas such as Bath and Stonehenge are part of the appeal, as is Vicars Close - the oldest existing street in the world and the Church of St Cuthbert. The historical feel of the city has led to it featuring in movies such as the Libertine starring Johnny Depp, Hot Fuzz and The Canterbury Tales
