This civil parish is the county town of Somerset and the largest town in the county. Tauntons boundaries are proximate to Sherford, Holway, Galmington, Bishops Hull, Rowbarton and Staplegrove. The town name evolved from Town on the River Tone and was of considerable importance in Saxon times. Pillboxes along the Bridgewater and Taunton Canal are a reminder of the WWII Taunton Stop Line, designed to prevent the advance of the German invasion. Other attractions are The Almhouses along East street, a row of 17th century houses that are still occupied. The Mary Street Unitarian Chapel and the Parish church of St Mary Magdalene are also site of historical interest. The countryside and villages surrounding Taunton make interesting excursions, suburbs include Bishops Hull, Staplegrove, Galmington. The numerous parks around the town are also worth a visit. Vivary Park, near the town centre, has the tributary of the River Tone flowing through it. Culturally, Taunton has featured in various novels, including The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and John Le Carres Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
