Rochester is a large town in Kent and is the home of many historic buildings including the Guildhall, the Corn Exchange, Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral. Some of the towns buildings date from as far back as the 14th century with many dating from the 18th century. There is evidence at Kit Coty House of Neolithic settlement in the area and Rochester has been occupied by Romans, Celts, Jutes, Saxons and Normans over its history. The novelist Charles Dickens lived at Gads Hill in nearby Higham and based many of his novels in Rochester. The town features in Great Expectations and The Pickwick Papers and the author is remembered every June in Rochesters Dickens Festival. The 16th century redbrick building, Eastgate House, is now the Charles Dickens Centre. Rochester Airport. just south of the town and near the river Medway, was once owned by the Short Brothers. The inaugural flight of their cantilever monoplane Short Scion was into Rochester airport from Gravesend
