This small market town in Oxfordshire sits on the west bank of the River Thames and is linked to Crowmarsh Gifford by a medieval stone bridge - Wallingford bridge. Its position gave it strategic importance and it has been a fortified location since Saxon times. Little remains Walligford Castle which was built in the late 11th century as much of the stone was used to renovate Windsor Castle and some of the rubble used for the tower of the town church of St Mary Le More. Wallingford has numerous historic inns and picturesque alleyways, a 17th century town hall and various shops around the former market square which also contains the war memorial. The BunkFest folk festival takes place annually and Wallingford was recently used as a Midsomer Murders location. Notable residents and town associates include mystery writer Agatha Christie, olympic gold medallist Anne Packer and Thomas Tusser, the poet credited with the proverb - a fool and his money are soon parted
