Bardon Mill is the name most commonly used for a collection of hamlets situated halfway between Newcastle and Carlisle on the northern slopes of the South Tyne Valley, between Haydon Bridge and Haltwhistle. Bardon Mill itself is grouped around the railway station on the Tyne Valley Line. Henshaw and Thorngrafton are older settlements perched higher on the hillside and include some traditional Northumbrian bastle houses, some still inhabited. The village is close to some of the major Hadrian's Wall sites, and offers some fine walks, particularly to Vindolanda, Hadrian’s Wall and Housteads Roman Fort. Trains from Newcastle and Carlisle stop at Bardon Mill several times a day, and buses are every hour. The Reivers Way’ footpath passes through Bardon Mill. Errington Reay Pottery established in 1878 is located in the village and close by are Ridley Hall part of the ancestral home of the Bowes Lyons (The late queen mum) and the family church ‘St Cuthbert’s’ in Beltingham. Ridley Hall is situated in what is now the national Trust Property of Allen Banks which has over 500 acres of woodland and riverbank walks. Northumberland National park starts one mile outside the village.
