Ripon is a small cathedral city and the fourth smallest city in England. Located on the confluence of the River Ure with two streams - Laver and Skell, it is part of the Skipton and Ripon constituency. Apart from Ripon this consists of Craven, Skipton, Bentham, Settle, Harrogate, Pately Bridge and Masham. Ripon originates from a 7th century monestary, the AD700 custom of blowing the wakemans horn at nine oclock is still carried out today. Ripon has very recently become a university town with the conversion of York St John College to York St John University in October 2006. Compared to its neighbouring Yorkshire towns and cities, Ripon is perhaps notable for its lack of cultural diverisity but it does have an interesting socioeconomic diversity considering its small population
