St Helens is a town in the county of Merseyside and is surrounded by rolling hills used mainly for pastoral agriculture. The highest point is Billinge Hill and has a stream, Mill Brook or Windle rook, running through it and connecting to the Sankey Canal. The St Helens section of this canal can be seen in the town centre but is now disused. It was originally opened in the 18th century and used to tranport coal to the River Mersey from pits in Haydock and Parr. St Helens only came into existence in the mid 19th century when it formed from the townships of Eccleston, Windle, Parr, Sutton and Prescot and prosperred from coal mining. The town also once had a major glass industry and although this has declined, still employs over a thousand people at the large Pilkington Brothers works. St Helens is considered the most Christian town in Britain with 87 percent of the population claiming to be Christian in the 2001 census. The town has seen large redovelopments over the last few decades and has a lively nightlife of bars and pubs, numerous restaurants and a the new Citadel Arts Theatre that attracts alternative music and the arts. The towns most successful sporting side is the St Helens RFC located in Ecclestone. They were the World Club Champions in 2001 and have won the Challenge Cup ten times. Notable residents include founder of the worlds largest pharmaceutical company Beechams - Thomas Beecham, comedian Johnny Vegas and leading womens footballer Lily Parr
