Although known as a seaside town, because it is situated at the estuary of the Humber, the sea is actually the mouth of the river Humber. Two large fortifications, the Humber forts, are visible at this point. A fishing village until the early 19th century, the town grew rapidly with the construction of a railway line between the industrial towns of Yorkshire and the coast. Before becoming one town, Cleethorpes was three small villages Itterby, Oole and Thrunscoe the thorpes, the addition of clee, an old word for clay, led to the towns name. There is considerable shipping traffic leaving the Humber port and the Cleethorpe seafront is an excellent vantage point. A lesser known fact about the town is that it is physically linked with the neighbouring town of Grimsby whos football team actually play in Cleethorpes, with the main town boundary running along the residential Park street. The Greenwich Meridian passes through Cleethorpes, this fact is marked by a steel plate in the coastal path. Cleethorpes residents are called Meggies
