Lying on the River Soar at the edge of the English National Forest, Leicester is the largest city in the English east Midlands. It is also one of the oldest cities in England, having been founded since the Roman occupation. High speed tarins operated by Midland Mainline mean London can be reached in just over an hour. The city centre is mainly Victorian however some areas have since been refurbished. It is home to the Haymarket and the Shire shopping centres, however these are soon to be renamed Highcross Quarter. Major industries include food processing (Walkers division of the PepsiCo group) with the one of the largest snack factories in Europe based in Beaumont Leys. Hosiery, printing and plastics are also big business. The city has a thriving asian community, mainly from the Indian subcontinent, provides numerous eateries and curry restaurants known as the Golden Mile. Consequently, there are several mosques, Hindu mandirs and Sikh gurdwaras and the annual Divali festival is held in Abbey Park
Leicester is also the home of the Foxes, Leicester Tigers, Gary Linekar, Next Head Office and De Montford University. The largest Caribbean Carnival outside of London is also held in the city, acknowledgement of the large Afro-Caribbean community centred around Highfields. An annual Pride Parade also takes place, as does the largest UK comedy festival and the Sumer Sundae misic festival. The National Space Centre is based in Leicester as the University of Leicester is one of the few UK universities that specialise in the subject. Many of the National Cycle Networks pass through Leicester with the city centre containing The Bike Park
