Previously Great Marlow or Chipping Marlow, this Buckinghamshire town is located on the River Thames and is equidistant from High Wycombe and Maidenhead. Due to its location, it has been an important trade route for London and has had its own market since the 14th century. The town still has good transport links with London via the First Great Western Trains services. Marlow hosts a regular regatta and is home to Britains greatest ever Olympian, Sir Steve Redgrave. A bronze statue of the five time Gold medallist stands in Higginson Park looking towards the finish line of the Marlow regatta on the Thames. Other notable residents of Marlow include Mary Shelly, author of Frankenstein, poet TS Eliot and Jerome K Jerome, an author best known for the travelogue Three Men in a Boat. There is a suspension bridge over the river at Marlow which was designed by civil engineer William Tierney Clarke. A bridge has existed over the Thames at Marlow since the reign of King Edward III.
