Shanklin, on the Isle of Wight just south of Sandown, is a popular sea resort with the main attractions being Shanklin Chine and the Old Village along the sandy beach. The esplanade is the other main tourist-oreinted part of town. Shanklin has two beaches, Hope Beach and Small Hope Beach which eventually meets Sandown beach. The town pier stood until it was destroyed by the Great Storm of 1987. Shanklins two theatres are The Portico Theatre and Shanklin Theatre located at the top of the high street. Another establishment along this stretch, Eglatine Cottage, once housed John Keats whilst he completed Lamia and began Ohto the Great with Cahrles Armitage Brown. Another notable guest was American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who lodged at the Crab Inn in 1868. Nearby are the towns of Yaverland, Alverstone, Queens Bower, Luccombe Village, Winford and Apse Heath
