Fort William is a major tourist destination lying at the southern end of the Great Glen, on the shores of Loch Linnhe and Loch Eil in the Scottish west highlands. The nearby settlement of Inverlochy was the main settlement of the greater area - called Lochaber. The construction of a fort after Oliver Cromwells invasion led to a settlement at the site. The fort (Fort William) took its name from William of Orange. The breathtaking views around Fort William take in Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in Britain), the Glencoe area and Glen Nevis. The towns proximity to both peaks makes it an ideal centre for hillwalking and climbing, hence the towns claim of being the outdoor capital of the UK. It is also close to the towns of Claggan and Achintee Ho. Fort William has two shinty teams, Fort William shinty club and Kilmallie Shinty Club. Shinty is a game played using sticks and balls and is one of the forebearers of ice hockey but it is now almost exclusively played in the Scottish Highlands
