This Hertfordshire town is situated between the garden cities of Letchworth and Welwyn. A former town name is recorded in the Domesday Book and the current name may derive from Old English for place at the stiff oak. The urban landscape o fthe town is a distinctive feature with many roundabouts and some of the tallest streetlights in the country although it is a very green town. Avenues are lined with Norway Maple and the town also has ancient semi-natural woodland at Monks and Whomerley Wood. Stevenage also has a King Georges Fields to commemorate the monarch King George V. Closeby is the ghostly stately home and rock venue Knebworth House. The towns industrial area houses British Aerospace offices and the laboratory complex of GlaxoSmithKline.
