Hereford is in the west of England, close to the Welsh border, and gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon word here meaning army and ford referring to a point at a river where soldiers can cross in formation. In this case, the river concerned was the Wye. Hereford is mainly a trading centre for the wider rural area and commonly known produce includes Bulmers Cider, Sun Valley poultry and cattle - namely the famous Hereford breed. On a more cultural note, the city cathedral dates back to 1079 and contains the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library, a collection that is famous worldwide. Hereford shares the hosting of the annual event of the Three Choirs Festival with Gloucester and Worcester. The event which originated in the 18th Century is one of the oldest music festivals in Europe and is held in Hereford once every three years
