Salford is the largest settlement in the City of Salford borough in Greater Manchester and is separated from the city of Manchester by its eastern boundary. Its name is derived from Sealhford meaning sallow-tree ford in Anglo-Saxon, a reference to the trees along the River Irwell which flows through Salford. The Industrial Revolution led to Salfords industry in cloth and silk and it was one of the UKs first industrial towns. The city provides a lot of options for shopping, the main location is the inner city area near the University of Salford. However, deprivation in this area has led to plans for a new city centre by 2020 and Salford Quays in one of the shortlisted areas. Salford also has cultural interests and has held an annual film festival since 2003 and was the setting for the 1999 movie East is East. It also hosts Manchesters international theatre festival each July. The city is the inspiration for the fictional area of Weatherfield where Coronation Street is based. Suprising for a city of its size, Salford only has a non-league football team but it does have a professional rugby league team - The Salford Reds. Notable Salford residents have included Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs, actor Sir Ben Kingsley and snooker great John Virgo
