Rochdale is a large town in north west England and is credited with being the birthplace of the Co-operative Movement. Its name comes from its location on the River Roch although the Domesday Book records it as Recedham. Rochdale has numerous landmarks and buildings worth visiting including the Victorian Town Hall which has a clock tower designed by Alfred Waterhouse and is located next to where the River Roch flows beneath the town. It is alledged that Adolf Hitler wanted the stained glass windows from the town hall spared from any bombing so they could be taken to Germany. Clegg Hall, a 17th century manor house currently undergoing restoration to its former state, is located between nearby Littleborough and Rochdale and is said to be haunted. There are various cultural organisations based in Rochdale such as Skylight Circus, Touchstones and the M6 Theatre Company.
