Oldham is a large town in the Penine Hills of Greater Manchester and was one of the first ever industrialised towns. It boomed during the industrial revolution and was, at its peak, the most productive cotton spinning mill town in the world. On the back of this, Oldham also led in the field of engineering and had a thriving coal mining industry to support the growing cotton milling trade. The coal mines were located mainly in the districts of Hollinwood and Werneth. Following the industrys demise, Oldhams affluence level dropped considerabley. Oldham is the brithplace of Louise Brown - the first baby to be born by IVF treatment. The town has been infamous for the Moors Murders and, more recently, the race related riots of 2001. Oldham has several notable landmarks which include Oldham Parish Church of St Mary with St Peter which is designed in a gothic revival style. The Oldham War Memorial is a bronze statue in the town, honouring the townsmen that perished in WWI. The town centre has a lively nightlife with numerous pubs, bars and nightclubs; Oldham also has a lot to offer culturally in the form of the Oldham Coliseum Theatre and the Grange Arts Centre and is also associated with numerous celebrities. Among these are former Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati, Take That singer Mark Owen, international cricketer Mike Atherton and former England footballer Paul Scholes. Oldham has numerous sports teams including Oldham Athletic FC, Oldham Roughyeds Rugby League Club a number of semi-professional circket teams
