This district of West London has the River Thames running along its southern border where it is crossed by Chiswick Bridge, Barnes Railway Bridge and Strand on the Green Railway Bridge. The districts name is Old English for Cheese Farm in reference to an annual cheese fair on Dukes Meadow that took place until the 18th century. Nowadays, Dukes Meadow is a popular point for viewing The Boat Race as the finish line is immediately down river from Chiswick Bridge. Chiswick developed as fishing village around St Nicholas church but later came to mean a wider area. The industry declined in the early 19th century due to pollution however the population grew ten fold during this century. Most of the ancient architecture is Victorian with one notable exception - Chiswick House, an extension of a Jacobean building which is thought to be one of the finest surviving examples of Palladian acrchitecture in the UK. Chiswicks proximity to TV studios means it has featured in numerous porgrammes including Inspector Morse, The Worst Week of my Life and Jonathan Creek
