Southend became a poplar seaside resort during the Victorian era and its economy has been heaviliy reliant on tourism ever since. Due to its proximity to London and good rail links, this Essex town was mainly visited by Londoners but is now a popular destination for tourist from all over Britain. Southend was originally the south end of the village of Prittlewell and has the worlds longest leisure pier. Many of the residents commute to nearby London for work although local industry does offer some employment. Southend has numerous seafront attractions including the Sea Life Centre Aquarium and a diesel railway that runs the length of the beach. Of the three theatres in the town, the Palace Theatre is the oldest and is a grade II listed building. The town has a few sporting teams at higehr levels which compete in the football Coca Cola League - Southend United and rugby National Division 3 South - Southend RFC and Westcliffe RFC. Southend is also the birthplace of actress Dame Helen Mirren and comedian Lee Evans
