Colchester is the oldest recorded Roman town in Britain and has a claim to being the oldest town in Britain. Conquered by the Roman in AD 43, it was the first Roman capital of Britain. The town has a rich history with various stages of occupation starting with Roman Colchester then on to sub-Roman and Saxon times, eventually leading to Medieval Colchester. The main landmark of this reign is the Colchester Cathedral. The Tudor period then came into dominance and there is still an area of the town referred to as the Dutch Quarter. A small obelisk in the town pays homage to lives of the Royalist leaders lost during the second English civil war. Colchester is also noted for its Victorian architecture, most notably, the Colchester Town Hall and the Jumbo Water Tower. The town boasts four musuems, including Tymperlys Clock museum and various Arts centres. Firstsite, the towns main art gallery, is thought by many to be one of the countrys leading contempory art venues. Nearby areas include Mile End, Greenstead, Shrub End, Old Heath and Blackheath
