Chelmsford in south east England is the county town of Essex and has been since the 13th century. Since the 19th century, the town has been an important industrial centre although it was originally an agricultural and market town. Chelmsford is the home of the first electrical engineering works in the UK and the first ball bearing factory, the products of which were used in the first transatlantic flights. The town is located on the River Can and River Chelmer and places of interest include the villages of Writtle and Pleshey. The former is where Robert the Bruce reportedly married his second wife, Elizabeth de Burgh and where King John built a hunting lodge. This site now lies with Writtle College which is an internationally renowned agriculture and horticulture centre. RHS Garden, Hyde Hall and Hylands House and Park are also worth visiting, the park has hosted vaious music festivals including the V Festival, the Chelmsford spectacular and Eurojam in 2005. Even the prison is of interest since some scenes from the TV series Porridge were filmed inside the prison. Chelmsford is the birthplace of numerous individuals of note including Rod Stewarts fiancee Penny Lancaster, Saint Etienne singer Sarah Cracknell, McFly drummer Harry Judd and former England goalkeeper Nigel Spink
