Basildon is located in the South of England and was designated new town status after WWII to accomodate some of the overspill of the London population. Created from the existing towns of Pitsea, Laindon and Vange, the larger area also includes Billericay and Wickford. The name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon personal name Beorhtel and the word dun meaning hill. Basildon has good transport links and most of the town residents commute to London via one of three stations (Pitsea, Basildon or Laindon). In the north of the town Festival Leisure Park, owned by Rochdale Union, is a trading park with numerous restaurants, a cinema, nightclubs and a fitness facility. Politically, Basildon is considered something of a guage for public opinion as the constituency results have been the same as the outcome of the General Election since 1974. The town also has some famous musical links, being the birthplace of the 1980s band Depeche Mode and Alison Moyet
