This small town in East Sussex is the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings in which the Duke of Normandy defeated King Harold II. The town developed around battle Abbey which was built to commemorate the battle. The Abbey gateway is still a dominant feature of the main street although little remains of the Abbey itself. Battle Abbey School, officially named St Martins Abbey, occupies the remaining cloisters. As Battle expanded, it developed a reputation for producing the finest gun powder in England at the gunpowder works on Powdermill Lane. Remains of the works can still be seen on Powdermill Lane. Battles exciting history is a strong appeal for tourists as is its Fireworks Night procession. Bonfire Night is of importance to the town due to its location in the Weald of Sussex. Battle was a site for refuge during WWI, with tunnels leading from various fields and cellars to the Abbey. These are now closed due to instability. More recently, Battle is known for being the hometown of the band Keane
