Nailsea is mainly a commuter town due to its proximity to Bristol, Bath and Weston Super Mare. The towns economy was initially reliant on coal mining and although most closed by the 19th century, the old ptis are still visible around the town. With coal mining came glass making and John Robert Lucas was at the forefront of this industry. His works, which closed in 1873, was the fourth largest of its kind in the UK and Nailsea glass is still a valuable collectors item today. A market is held every tuesday on Clevedon Road with numerous stalls selling local produce grown in the Nailsea Moors, among other places. This area to the west of the town was drained and has been farmed by several generations of farmers. Nailsea has a variety of pubs, youth groups which organise the Mayfair and Nailsea Carnival as well as theatre, musical and orchestral groups. Nearby towns include Backwell, Clevedon. Portishead, Tickenham and Wraxall
