Situated south of Sheffield on the confluence of the rivers Rother and Hipper, Chesterfield is Derbyshires largest town. Perhaps best known for the crooked spire of its Church of Saint Mary. Legend has it the Spire will straighten when a virgin walks down the Isle. The historic market town benefited greatly from the building of the Chesterfield Line. The building of this part of the Derby to Leeds railway line led to the discovery of coal, specifically during the construction of the Clay Cross Tunnel. The Solar Pyramid will be a new landmark and is to be erected on the outskirts of the town. Vicar Lane is the focal point of shopping in Chesterfield and the The Pavements shopping centre (known as The Precint by the locals) also caters for residents needs. Much of the town centre is retained from the pre-war era, one of Britains oldest pubs can be found in an area of town called The Shambles. For a more cultural visit, the Winding Wheel is a multi purpose venue for concerts etc and smaller venues such as the Pomegranate theatre or the Chesterfield museum next door will keep you occupied. Altenatively, follow trails and tracks to villages hidden among green hills and river valleys and experience Bolsover Castle and Hardwick. Nearby towns and villages include, Brampton, Brimington Common, Hasland, Hasland Green and Cock Alley
