Situated in north-west England at the head of Windemere, England's largest lake, this Cumbria town is within the Lake District National Park in the Westmorland area. Described by Ian McMillan as a gentle place where people wear anoraks without irony, the name is derived from Old Norse for summer pasture. Ambleside is a base for hiking, mountaineering and mountain biking. The Climbers Shop, the first outdoor shop in Ambleside, opened in 1959 and outdoor pursuits are now an important part of the economy. Views of the lake and surrounding mountains can be seen whilst travelling on Steamers to Bowness on Windemere and Lakeside. Ambleside also has a good selection of shops, hotels, guesthouses, pubs and restaurants. Other attractions include, the Armitt Library and Museum, Bridge House, St Martins College formerly known as Charlotte Mason College. Be sure to pick up a souvenir from Hannah Robinson China, the only specialist China shop in the Lake District National Park
