Officially called Londonderry, Derry is a Northern Ireland city also affectionately known as the Maiden City. This nickname is reference to the fact that the city walls were never penetrated during the 17th century seige of Derry. The west bank of the River Foyle flows along the old walled city of Londonderry with the present city connected by a bridge and covering both banks. Derry is an anglicisation of Doire meaning Oak-grove in Irish, a name derived from the settlements original name which translates as Oakwood of Calgach. Calgach was a Caledonian warrior and leader that claimed the North west Ulster area that Derry is situated in. The addition of London came in 1613 when the London guilds were first established in the city
Derry is one of the longest continuously inhabited places in Ireland and was also the first planned city in Northern Ireland. These days, it is the major shopping centre of the North West regions with two main shopping centres - Foyleside and Richmond with the Quayside centre serving the city side. Tourism is said to be the key to the economic future of the city, the planned Wall City Signature Project is set to ensure that future.
