Prior to 1974, the city was sometimes known as Durham and Framwelgate. Although a small city, it is the main settlement of the City of Durham district of County Durham (north east England). The River Wear flows through the city and the riverbanks are heavily wooded, adding a scenic beauty. The current cathedral - Durham Cathedral, still has remains of St Cuthbert and The Venerable Mead. It is regarded by some, including travel writer Bill Bryson, as the finest catherdral in the world. The name Durham is from Old English for hill-island, a reference to the citys steep, hilly embankments. The entire centre of Durham has been designated a conservation area and contains over 603 listed buildings. Particularly notable among those are the Grade I listed buildings - Chorister School, St Giles Church, Kepier Hospital. The Grade II listings are no less impressive and include Aykley Heads House, Cosins Library, St Johns College and Railway viaduct. Some of Durhams most notable residents include Prime Minister Tony Blair, travel writer Bill Bryson, ex-footballer Roy Keane, cricketer Steve Harmison and the Archbishop of Canterbury Michael Ramsey
