Newry is Northern Irelands fourth largest city and is also one of its oldest cities having been founded in 1144. It developed from a monastery and the city now sits in a valley between two designated Areas of Outstanding Beauty - the Mourne Mountains and the ring of gullion. The Irish name is An Tlur meaning the yew tree and the city has the River Clanrye running through it. The river marks the boundary between county Down and county Armagh, Newry lies roughly equally in both counties. The town also has two of Irelands oldest churches as well as numerous other notable buildings. Among these are the town hall which is built over the River Clanrye, the Craigmore Viaduct designed by Sir John Oneill is the highest viaduct in Ireland and MacNeills Egyptian Arch, a railway bridge that was chosen as the 2006 British pound coin design representing Northern Ireland. The River Clanrye runs parallel to Newry Canal which was the UKs first commercial canal. Newry is the birthplace of a few notable individuals including one time British and Commonwealth Heavyweight champion Danny McAlinden, folk singer Susan McCann, Northern Ireland's most capped footballer Pat Jennings
