This large Cheshire town, historically a part of Lancashire, was founded as a crossing on the River Mersey and became a centre of industry during Roman times. Warrington was also of importance during the English Civil War, the armies of Oliver Cromwell and the Earl of Denby stayed near the town centre. Industrially, the town thrived on steel, tanning, chemicals, textiles and brewing but heavy industry declined by the 1980s. Warrington has numerous sites worth visiting including the 17th century Cromwells Cottage, Unilever soapworks, the Cheshire Lines railway warehouse, Warringtons oldest pub - the Barley Mow and even the town hall for its goldgen gates. Warrington hosts a number of walking days - a form of church parade, throughout the year along with numerous festivals and carnivals such as the Lymm May Queen, the Lymm Dickensian Festival, St Georges Day parade and the Westy Carnival. Among Warringtons notable residents is actor Pete Postlethwaite, 18th century freethinker and co-discoverer of oxygen - Joseph Priestley, the band members of Starsailor, actress Sue Johnstone and the likes of Chris Evans and Kerry Katona attended a local high school
