Ely is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, the closest one to Cambridge, and is the third smallest city in England. Having retained many of its historic buildings, it is a very attractive city with buildings such as Oliver Cromwells 16th century home. It is now a Tourist Information Centre but some rooms are a museum set up as they would have been in Cromwells time. Another building of note is the cathedral which is also known as the Ship of the Fens as its towers dominate the view of these low lying wetlands when seen from a distance. The name Ely is alledged to mean eel island, in reference to an island with a lot of eels, which is probable as marshes were historically linked with high eel populations. The citys location on the River Great Ouse meant it was a significant port until the 18th century. Nowadays the river is a popular boating area, the University of Cambridge rowing team has a boathouse on the river bank
