The Cairngorms National Park in Scotland's Highlands/Grampian region contains the highest mountain range in the British Isles. The habitats are many, glacier valleys, woods, heather clad peat, moor land and bog. Many villages and small towns have nature trails, gift shops and a warm welcome in inns, restaurants and shops.

Visit Aviemore at any time of year. It is particularly known for its winter sports. Those interested in history will love royal Balmoral and Drumin Castle ruins.
It is easy to access the mountain side, but it is a wild place, where walkers who are not on established trails need expertise, to carry a map and compass and come prepared for all weathers. Look out for guided walks with expert local guides and rangers. There is fabulously beautiful Glenmore Forest Park, with its excellent walking trails where you can take a walk around freshwater Loch Morlich with its sandy beaches or onto the mountainsides. Low level walking is available in the stunning Spey, Don and Dee Valleys. Try to spot golden eagles spiralling above the mountains, or turkey sized grouse called capercailzie. There are red deer, reindeer and wild cats which look like, but don't respond like pet tabby cats.
Golf in the area is world famous not least for the beauty of the courses. Try the James Braid golf course at Boat of Garten village near Loch Garten reserve. "Craggan Outdoors" in Speyside offers a range of supervised actives including climbing, gorge walking, kayaking, mini quads, paint balling and pony trecking.
Lovers of good food and drink are well catered for. Try the local porridge to which you could add cream or even a wee dram of whisky. Why not sample single malts at Dalwhinnie distillery or fine ales at Cairngorm Brewery at Aviemoor. There are locally sourced quality meats, venison pies, game stews, oatcakes or bannocks, crowdie (whey cheese rolled in oats), and of course the richly flavoured haggis.
