Slough is one of the most important business centres in the south east due to its proximity to both London and Reading and because of the Slough Trading Estate housing companies such as the European headquarters for Mars Incorporated. This has resulted in Slough becoming one of the most culturally diverse towns in the UK. Unemployment in Wales in the 1930s resulted in a huge influx into Slough. Immigrants from Commonwealth states followed in their numbers during the post-war years. Slough also has the highest percentage of Sikhs in the UK, the international non-profit organisation Khalsa Aid was developed by youth from the Slough Sikh community.
Slough was perhaps made infamous by Ricky Gervais and The Office and has been the subject of much derision. However, there is a multimillion pound redevelopment plan for the town centre. Famous individuals linked with Slough include comedian Jimmy Carr, Queen Victoria, novelist Charles Dickens, singer Geri Halliwell and engineer Isombard Kingdom Brunel

Ohter town areas are Britwell, Huntercombe, Lynch Hill, Manor Park, Salt Hill, Upton Lea and Windsor Meadows. Windsor, Maidenhead, Uxbridge and Bracknell are situated nearby to the south, west, northeast and southwest consecutively
