Bedford was a market town for the surrounding agricultural region from the early Middle Ages. Famous Bedfordians include rower Tim Forster, athelete Paula Radcliffe, the late Ronnie Barker, footballer Andy Johnson and Eddie the Eagle. The river Ouse passes through the town centre, the gardens lining its path are known as The Embankment. The Victoria, recreated home of the Higgins family of brewers, houses the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery. The River Festival two day event held every two years in Bedford is one of the largest outdoor events, second only to the Notting HIll Carnival. Bedford is also host to Britains largest one day rowing event, the Bedford Regatta. Amature dramatics are popular in Bedford with The Swan Theatre Company perfoming in venues such as The Place and The Bowen West Theatre
