The administrative centre for south Ayrshire county is also the county town for Ayrshire county, south west Scotland. Ayr was one of four Scottish towns that competed for city status in 2002 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee. A close neighbour is Alloway, known for its associations with the poet Robert Burns. Ayr is famously the location of the first Parliament of Scotland held by Robert The Bruce. Ayr racecourse is an important venue in Scottish racing, hosting events including the Scottish Grand National and the Ayr Gold Cup. The largest of the Clyde Coast holiday town, Ayr lies in the centre of the famous Firth of Clyde playground. With the majestic peaks of Arran and the Mull of Kintyre, the Ayrshire countryside was the inspiration for some of the finest verses of the National Bard of Scotland. Although made more famous by Burns poetry, Ayr is leading holiday centre in its own right. The Twa Brigs, the River Ayr, the Auld Brig and the Gardens, Pavilion and Heads all add to the towns appeal
