West Bromwich is a west midlands town located five miles from Birmingham. The names translates as the little village on the heath of broom and is first recorded in the Domesday book. The town dialect is a somewhat dilution of the Black Country dialect but is distinctly different from the Brummie dialect used in nearby Birmingham. The town hall is built in an Italian Gothic style and occupies a special place in local hearts. It was originally built as a monument of Victorian aspirations that a town of its stature should have a suitably grand public building. West Bromwich grew around a Benedictine priory in the 12th century and was an important coaching stop on journeys to London and Shrewsbury during the 18th century. The discovery of coal deposits in the 19th century led to rapid growth in spring, gun and nail making industries. Today, engineering and chemicals are a big part of West Bromwichs economy. The town football team West Bromwich Albion is nicknamed the Baggies and competes in the Coca Cola Championship. Famous people associated with West Bromwich include comedian Frank Skinner, heptathlon gold medallist Denise Lewis, chess Grandmaster Jana Bellin and Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant
