Named after Thomas Telford, a famous civil engineer Telford is a new town in the borough of Telford and Wrekin and the ceremonial county of Shropshire, England. Telford incorporates the northern half of Ironbridge Gorge, a scenic tourist destination whose major businesses include the Inland Revenue. The town has also attracted several large IT services companies which include EDS, Cap Gemini and Fujitsu. The appeal being it connection to the M6 via the M54 motorway which was built in the 1983. Telford is now the largest town in Shropshire, town planners hope to expand Telford over the next 13 with a population of a quarter of a million in 2020 as the target. The building of Telford in the 1960s and 1970s enveloped the existing villages of Dawley, Trench, Muxton, Stirchley, Brookside, Donnington, Oakengates, Wellington, Leegomery, Shawbirch and Madeley
